Jeanine Marie D’Armiento, M.D.,
Ph.D.
Jeanine
Marie D’Armiento was the first M.D./Ph.D. student at UMDNJ-RWJMS to
receive the Ph.D. in the Graduate Program in Biochemistry & Molecular
Biology at the UMDNJ – Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Piscataway
Division. Her research using transgenic mice provided the first
evidence of the role played by collagenase in the etiology of emphysema.
After leaving UMDNJ in 1992, she completed her residency in medicine
and fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Columbia University where she
became the youngest Assistant Professor of Medicine ever appointed in
1997. She has continued to attract international recognition for
her research, including continuing work on the pathogenic role of collagenases
in various diseases. She had received prestigious awards from
Burroughs Wellcome Pharmaceutical and Lucille Markey Foundations, and
research grants from the NIH, American Heart Association and other agencies.
She exemplifies the goal of the M.D./Ph.D. program to produce clinical
scientists who excel in research, education and patient care.
